Holiday Games

Students certainly had fun playing holiday games.  There's always a lot of joy in the gym as children participate in games like The Gingerbread Man, The Christmas Basketball Shootout, Build a Snowman, Run Run Reindeer, Grizzly Bear, Reindeer Relays, and The Christmas Paper Party Wrap. I sometimes read a short holiday book that corresponded with the game.  Children enjoyed hearing the stories and looking at the fun pictures.
Reindeer Relays were such fun.  The cone was the chimney and the reindeer
had to pull Santa on a scooter to the chimney so the present could be placed inside.
We read the book, "The Night Before Christmas."

The Christmas Paper Party Wrap was a song that had children using pieces
of paper for a dance.  In the end, the paper was wadded up for a snowball fight.

Grizzly Bear was a tag game where students tiptoed up to sleeping bears who woke up to chase the children back to home base.  We read the book "Bear Stays Up for Christmas."

Run, Run, Reindeer is a running game that children love.  Mats are set up in a circle as rooftops and children (the reindeer) jog from mat to mat as music plays. When the music stops they must be on a mat.  If caught off the rooftop three times, a child must go to the reindeer hospital to do an exercise to get healthy and return to the game.  We read the book "The Reindeer Christmas."

Students used various pieces of PE equipment to Build a Snowman.
We read the book "Snowmen at Christmas."

The Christmas Basketball Shootout game had teams racing against each other to spell
holiday words or phrases.  Each time a basket was made, a letter was added to the word.

The Gingerbread Man was a tag game and we read a book by the same name.
Students pretended to be gingerbread boys and girls and ran as fast
as they could to keep away from the tagger.  It was fun to hear the children chant,
"Run, run, run, as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!

Learning to tie tennis shoes

Kindergarten students have taken on the challenge of learning to tie a tennis shoe.  This skill is always a major milestone for young children so I love to help students learn and perfect the tying method. Students practiced on an adult tennis shoe and received a certificate when they did it on their own.  I'm thrilled with how many students have already mastered the skill.  I hope parents will continue to work with their children at home to perfect the technique. Children are so proud of this accomplishment and I know you are, as well.

Throwing Activities

Students had a great time working on throwing skills over the past two months.  They practiced on both overhand and underhand throws by working with targets, partners, or playing various games that allowed them to put correct technique into practice.

Students worked on overhand and underhand throws by aiming at pink
pig plates on the wall.  If they hit the target they yelled out "OINK."

Students played a game about healthy choices and threw overhand if the
picture was an unhealthy choice and underhand if the picture was a
healthy choice (frown action or smile action). They rotated to many different cards
so they could decide between healthy and unhealthy choices.

This was a fun game called "Oscar's Trash Can."  Students threw balls in to the trash can
made of mats while Oscar(s) threw the balls back out.  Everyone loved this game!

"Ocean Rescue" let students rescue a classmate in the pretend life preserver.
As the skills got better, the hoop moved back farther and farther.

When first working on throwing and catching, students used scarves.  This let the
children slow down the action, concentrate on stepping forward in opposition,
and allowed the person catching the scarf more time to react.

Grandparent's Day 2014

Thank you to the many grandparents, parents, families, and friends who attended our recent Early Childhood Thanksgiving/Grandparent's Day program in the south gymnasium.  It was such a special occasion and the students were thrilled to have you attending this wonderful event.  The children did a fabulous job performing for you.  We hope you enjoyed the many songs and dances that made this program so fun.

Here are links to the routines done in the Physical Education segment of the program:
