Fun in San Francisco's Chinatown

This was such a busy week in Physical Education.  We finished up the week with two activities where we returned to San Francisco.  We visited Chinatown and had an Asian New Year parade and a chopsticks relay. What fun!

The parade was amazing.  It was so wonderful to see all the children dressed in the lucky color red.  Many students came in the traditional dress of their country and looked fabulous.  We had a great time parading through the lower school, middle school, and gym.  Mrs. Ghosh's students decorated the hallways with paper lanterns that they made in class and they looked beautiful.  During the parade, students used sparkle wands to represent fireworks, carried lanterns to light the way, carried "2018 Year of the Dog" fans, and played rhythm instruments for noise.  They carried a paper dragon, as well.  Upper School students from China and Korea joined one of our parades in the afternoon.  All students went home with a red envelope which, in many Asian cultures, is usually filled with money.  Our envelopes contained a lucky penny, a fortune cookie, some Asian candy, and a hug coupon that children are supposed to redeem with someone in their family.

The chopsticks relay was a fun way to work on fine motor skills.  Students used modified chopsticks to pick up cotton balls (grains of rice) and move them into a bowl. The grip was challenging but most children caught on within a few minutes.  I was impressed.

Mrs. Wagner received a lucky red envelope from one of her students.

Sparkle wands, lanterns, dragons, and noise makers filled our parade.

Some of our Upper School international students from China and Korea joined
our parade in the afternoon.  They received red envelops, too.

Students have fun with the chopsticks relay.

Great job picking up that grain of rice.
