Oktoberfest, World Octopus Day, and American Touch Tag Day - October 8, 2018

The Oktoberfest festival finished up yesterday in Munich, Germany.  Preschool children took this opportunity to learn a dance in PE today called the Kinderpolka, which means "children's polka" in German. They worked with a partner, clapped hands, hit thighs, marched in place, turned circles, and shook a finger at their partner saying "Now you be good," which is a silly part of the dance.

Students are in a circle clapping hands together with a partner.

These students point to their partner and say "Now you be good."

Today was also World Octopus Day.  Preschool students did a movement activity to a song called "Ollie the Octopus," acting out the words of the song. Later they took the actions and moved them to the mini parachute, which is always fun for the children.  We have a pre-student teacher from Friends University who is helping with some of our preschool classes. She enjoyed working with the students on this activity.

Children make a cave where Ollie the Octopus lives.

This class moves the parachute like an ocean where Ollie makes his home.

October 8 was also American Touch Tag Day.  Kindergarten students played a simple game called Walk Tag.  Students worked as partners to walk as fast as they could.  One person was "It" and carried a foam frisbee for tagging, while the second person tried to keep away from the tagger.  If the person was touched, players exchanged places with the new person getting a 5 second head start.  We traded partners often.  As with most tag games, this one kept players MOVING, even if it was just a fast walk.

Foam Frisbees were used as the method of tagging.
