Alaska is the location for the Iditarod, often referred to as “The Last Great Race.” This event is a dog sled race that covers more than 1000 miles across the frozen tundra of Alaska. Sleds are pulled by teams of dogs and have two lead dogs that share the task of keeping the musher safe and on the trail. There are many check points along the route and dogs are fed, rested, and checked by a veterinarian to assure that they are healthy enough to continue the race. In PE, students got the opportunity to view pictures on the Iditarod web site and we talked about the event before holding our own Iditarod race. Cones acted as snow drifts, blue tarps were frozen water, and mats designated mountains. We used scooters for the sleds and students acted as the dogs. We used Kix cereal for our dog food and the dogs and mushers rested for a short time during the race. It was fun!
