Our last stop on our imaginary cruise is Hawaii. This location comes at such an opportune time, as we are preparing for our annual "Mom's Day" celebration, which will have a Hawaiian theme. Our culminating activity will be doing the Hukilau dance with mothers. Students have been working on this dance in class and have learned that it tells the story of a fishing party. It will be great fun for students to do this dance with their moms. In Physical Education we also worked with poi balls which are balls attached to short ropes. They are turned in various ways. In Hawaii, a person will often see this activity performed to music at a luau. It is very challenging. Students got to watch a performance via computer. Younger students worked on some of the skills with one poi ball and older students used two. We also worked on balancing activities with the foam surf boards and used the music "Wipe Out." Students learned about the Iron Man Triathlon held each year in Hawaii. We held our own version of this event and swam (on scooters), biked (using trikes), and ran. Hawaii was a great place to finish our imaginary cruise around the world.
