Learning About Germs and Hand Washing

Teaching children about germs and hand washing is an important lesson in school.  Students did an activity where they covered both hands with hand lotion and then placed one hand in some dry rice that was used to simulate germs.  After doing this, they pressed both hands together to show how germs transfer from location to another.  This activity was followed by a lesson on the proper way to wash hands.  We also talked about the need to cough or sneeze in a tissue or elbow.  A spray water bottle was used to show the children how the fluid from a cough or sneeze travels through the air and gets on other people.  This was a very important lesson and the children practiced using their elbow to catch their cough.  We like to say, "Cough or sneeze in your elbow, please."
