The Annual Physical Education Kentucky Derby - Friday

What a great day at the Kentucky Derby!

During Physical Education classes on Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2, early childhood students participated in our own version of the Kentucky Derby, an annual horse race that is run the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs Race Track in Louisville, Kentucky.  We had the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home,” stick horse races, lemonade mint juleps, a grandstand, homemade binoculars, fabulous hats and, of course, red roses.  This event has become an annual tradition at Wichita Collegiate School and the children enjoyed it again this year.

We talked about the Kentucky Derby ahead of time in PE and students watched a video of last year’s race.  Based on name alone, each class chose a horse from this year's Kentucky Derby entrants.  Roses were delivered to Miss Watson's preschool class, whose choice, California Chrome, won the annual “Run for the Roses.”  This gesture always creates a lot of excitement among the students as they anticipate the event and cheer for their class horse while watching the real Kentucky Derby on television.

It was a very fun day at our Kentucky Derby and I hope that students shared some of the excitement of this tradition with parents.
