A Lesson in Hand Washing

One of our first lessons in Physical Education took place in the teacher's classroom.  We talked about the importance of washing hands to prevent the spread of germs.  We went through the procedure of water, soap, scrub while singing the "ABC" song, rinse, and towel dry.  We talked about scrubbing the palm, top of the hand, and between the fingers. Students walked down to the west wing bulletin board to see and discuss the many occasions that a person should wash his/her hands.  There was also a discussion and demonstration about covering one's cough or sneeze.  We use the phrase, "Cough and sneeze in your elbow, please."  I hope you will help children with this important lesson. Remind them about the use of tissues, keeping hands away from mouth, nose, and other unclean areas. Encourage them to use their elbow to catch a sneeze or cough, and to use hand sanitizer when soap is not available.  All of this will help us have a healthier school community.
