Coming Soon - The Chinese New Year Parade and Collegiate Pancake Race

Two events will be held in Physical Education immediately following conferences.  The Early Childhood Chinese New Year Parade will take place on Monday, February 8, and the Collegiate Pancake Race will take place on Tuesday, February 9.  These events usually don't happen so close together but that is just the way they fall on the calendar this year.

Early Childhood students will participate in a Chinese New Year parade during their physical education time.  We will parade through the halls with dragons, instruments, noise makers, sparkle wands, and lanterns.  The first class of the morning will find our Upper School Chinese students joining us for this special event.  I will hand out a traditional red envelope to every student. Inside the envelope there will be a lucky penny, fortune cookie, Chinese lollipop, and a hug coupon for each student to share with a special person.  (I hope it's you!)  For this event, I am asking students to dress in the color red, which is a lucky color in China.  If students have a traditional costume or some kind of oriental clothing (dragons, Chinese writing, monkey for Year of the Monkey) they may wear that. There is no need to buy anything special.  If your child does not have anything red, just wear normal school attire.

The second event will be the Collegiate pancake race to be held on Tuesday, February 9, in the south gym.  As you may know, each year there is an international pancake race between Liberal, Kansas, and Olney, England, on Shrove Tuesday.  Each location holds a race that is about a quarter mile long where individuals dress up in an apron and scarf and run through the streets with a pancake in a small skillet. They are required to flip the pancake at the beginning and end of the race. The race is timed and whichever town has the fastest runner is declared the International Pancake Race Winner.  Our early childhood division has been doing this for a long time and our students have so much fun.  For this event, each student will need to bring a bandana.  I will provide the aprons, skillets, and pancakes.  It's going to be a great time!
