Fencing was a term that students were not familiar with. They referred to it as sword fighting so I showed them a brief video of fencing and the three different types of swords used in competition; the foil, sabre, and epee. We compared length of blade and the look of the handle. One, the sabre, looked very much like a pirate sword so that was the overwhelming favorite. To fence, students used half of a swim noodle and had to touch the toes of their opponent. We used the tile floor so that students could follow a line and understand the concept of advance and retreat. It was a fun activity!
