National Cheese Pizza Day

Being a favorite food of many young children, it was necessary for us to celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day on September 5.  We played a game where children were divided into two teams.  Eleven buckets were set up with each bucket having its own letter from the words CHEESE PIZZA.  Each team was given a crate full of tennis balls .  The object of the game was to step forward in opposition and bounce the ball (cheese) into the bucket (pizza).  The team getting the ball into bucket #1 (letter C) first, received a point.  Everyone then moved to bucket #2 (letter H).  This continued on down the line until each bucket had a tennis ball in it and the words CHEESE PIZZA were spelled out. This seemed like a simple game but it was actually much harder than it looked and children really had to gauge the strength and direction of their bounce.  It was actually quite challenging and fun!

Buckets spelling out the words "CHEESE PIZZA" lined the center of the gym. Students aim their tennis balls towards the letter"C."

A ball heads for the bucket with the letter "E" as students concentrate on accuracy.

Students work to step forward in opposition.  This concept is challenging for early childhood students but the skill is very important in many physical activities.
