National Fire Prevention Day - October 9, 2018

This is fire prevention week and today, October 9, is national fire prevention day.  In Physical Education we talked about fire safety and the practices of "stop, drop, and roll", "stay low and go", and "shout to get out."  Students practiced these procedures in the gym before we worked on overhand throwing as the day's activity.  Pictures of flames were put on the wall and students threw a white yarn ball (water) at the flame to put it out.  Students also had fun throwing at a pyramid of cups that had flames on them.  Again, they were pretending to put a fire out with the white yarn ball. They loved this activity.

This year I am changing my method for teaching the overhand throw so students are being introduced to some new information.  It's going to take a while before everyone feels comfortable with the new way but we will keep working on it all this week and for the remainder of the year.

Students cover their face and roll on their back as they practice "stop, drop, and roll."

After talking about the dangers of smoke, students "stay low and go."

Students touch the door with the back of their hand to feel if it is hot.

This class throws the white yarn balls towards the targets on the wall.

White yarn balls head towards the wall with the flame targets.

Her smile shows that this student must have hit the flame target.

One of our student helpers from Friends University helps this student with his overhand throw.
Red cups with flames on them were used as the target.  It was much like a carnival game.

The student in the pink shirt hits all of the cups.

This student celebrates after knocking down all three cups and putting out the flames.
