The Collegiate Pancake Race

Our annual Collegiate Pancake Race, which coincides with the international pancake race between Olney, England, and Liberal, Kansas, on Shrove Tuesday, was held yesterday and today in Physical Education classes.  Children, staff members, and many teachers dressed in aprons and bandannas to run through the gym with their frying pans and pancakes.  Once again, the weather was a deterrent to running outside, but we still had fun running in the gym. Students practiced the flipping with round beanbags and used real pancakes for the flipping and running during the actual races.  Thank you to Ana and Sherri for making all the pancakes this year.  It was much appreciated.

This year the international pancake race was won by Olney with a 1:06 time for the 415 yard course through their town, compared to the 1:09 time posted by the runner from Liberal.  Kansas will give it another try next year.

Students had fun in the lunch room today, as well, as pancakes were served for international pancake day.  Yum!!

There are links to pictures at the end of this blog.  I hope you will take some time to view them.

This class poses in front of the sign before the race begins.

Students practiced flipping a beanbag first before adding the real pancake.

The races were run with real pancakes.

The first race was a straight line race in the gym down and back, with a flip at the start and end.

The second race was a race around the gym.  Again, two flips of the pancake were required.

Even the teachers had fun with this event.

Students were excited about pancakes for lunch.

All smiles about pancakes on this very special day.
