Another soccer idea for this week - "Red Light, Green Light"

Remember the old game "Red Light, Green Light"? It's perfect for working on soccer dribbling.

Red Light, Green Light

1. Each player has a ball except the one player that is designated as the “light”.  (Remember that a soccer ball is not necessary to work on this skill.)

2. Lines from start to finish should be as far apart as your area will allow.  If you have something to mark your playing area, that is helpful.  Boundaries help young children.

3. Players start from the line opposite the “light”.

4.The “light” then turns his/her back on the dribblers and yells “GREEN LIGHT”.

5. On this signal, the players start to dribble towards the “light”.

6. When the “light” turns around, calling “RED LIGHT”, players must freeze and stop their ball.

7. If the “light” catches players moving, that player must return to the starting line (for younger children you might suggest taking 3 steps backwards).

8. For older children, let them play this game the way it is written and later require that the ball not be moving at the time "RED LIGHT" is called.  This lets students work on stopping the ball.

9. The first player to cross the line where the “light” is standing is the winner and becomes the new “light”.

10. Remember that this game is fun to play just running.  Another option is to toss and catch a ball or hand dribble a basketball down the driveway.  (Always supervise children if playing this game near a street.)
