Upcoming Events in Physical Education

Young Author's Conference

Kindergarten students will participate in the library's Young Author Conference event on Thursday, April 2, 2015.  This year, illustrator Brad Sneed will be returning to Collegiate. He does art work for multiple authors and his illustrations are always fun and creative.  As part of the event, a physical activity is always included.  This year, in recognition of the book "Smokey Mountain Rose", lower school and kindergarten students will scatter square dance.  Our kindergarten students are very familiar with this activity, as we did it for Pioneer Day.  No special items will be required for this event other than tennis shoes.

Kindergarten Field Day

On Monday afternoon, April 27, Kindergarten students will have their annual Kindergarten Field Day on the Collegiate track and football field.  This is a fun event with various games for the entire afternoon.  Many parents signed up to volunteer for this event.  If you are one of the volunteers, please look for a confirmation sheet outside your child's classroom to let me know that you are still available to help.  A letter will be sent home after I have confirmation of the volunteers.  Students will need tennis shoes for this event.

The Kentucky Derby

One of the most fun Physical Education events of the school year is the annual Kentucky Derby. Each year before the real race, on the first Saturday in May, students decorate hats and come to the gymnasium for a stick horse race.  We drink lemonade mint juleps, sing "My Old Kentucky Home", listen to the trumpet call, and watch the race in our grand stand with homemade binoculars. It is so fun! Ahead of time, each class picks a horse from the real Kentucky Derby and after the race is won on Saturday, the class that picked the winning horse receives roses.  Over the years, this has created a real interest among our students and they enjoy watching the race on television.  Students will need tennis shoes for this event and a hat.  There have been many times when we have had some amazing hats. Parents and students have really gotten in to the decorating spirit.  We've also had some very beautiful hats. Whatever your child decides to wear, I'm sure it will add to the fun of the event. All preschool, Prekindergarten and Kindergarten students will participate in this event during PE time on Thursday, April 30, and Friday, May 1.  If your child does not usually come to PE on either of these days, please look for notification from the classroom teacher as to which day your class will attend.
