Get Your Hats Ready for the Upcoming Early Childhood Kentucky Derby

As is the tradition at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs race track in Louisville, Kentucky, our early childhood students are invited to wear a hat for our annual Kentucky Derby horse race, to be held in Physical Education on Thursday, May 4, and Friday, May 5.  Students can bring a traditional hat, or choose to decorate one in a fun, silly, or beautiful way.  In the past, we have had some amazing hats that have added such a festive flair to our event. When class pictures were taken, everyone truly looked like they were at the Derby.

Our Kentucky Derby has students riding stick horses around a track that is set up in the gymnasium. There are lemonade mint juleps (with real mint from Mrs. Burcham's garden), a grandstand, homemade binoculars, the trumpet call, partial singing of "My Old Kentucky Home," and roses for the winning horse and jockey.  It is so fun to watch. Everyone looks forward to this very special event.

If you need ideas for hats, please check out the display cases in the early childhood entrance or view the slideshow on the television outside the office.  Have fun making your hat!
