National Mason Jar Day - November 30, 2018

National Mason Jar Day seems like such an unusual day to recognize but preschool children and one Kindergarten class celebrated the day in Physical Education by doing a Mason Jar Fitness activity.  Students had to drop clothes pins into a jar while standing above it.  For every clothes pin missed, they had to jog a lap around half of the gymnasium.  Afterwards, students counted how many clothes pins landed in the jar.  Students didn't seem to mind missing.  They love jogging!

Although mason jars are often used for craft projects, flower arrangements, or decorative purposes, I talked to the children about the original purpose of the mason jar which was for canning vegetables and fruits.  The mason jar is 150 years old.

Students prepare to drop a clothes pin into a mason jar below them.

Taking careful aim.

This student has dropped a lot of clothes pins in the jar.  Accuracy is a big part of this activity.

A missed clothes pin means an opportunity for a fitness jog half way around the gym.

Pre-school students work to get in shape while jogging around the gym half way.

This student points to the clothes pin that he dropped in the jar.

Celebrating because the clothes pin went in the mason jar.
