Pancake Race is held in Physical Education

This class poses before the race.

A big smile before the start of the race around the gym.

Ready for the start of the race.

Before flipping the pancakes, students practiced with a round bean bag.

Here is a great toss of the pancake in to the air.

This student is totally focused on his pancake.

Students run in the gym attempting to keep their pancake in the skillet.

Decked out in a scarf, apron, skillet, and real pancake, students participated in our very own pancake race in Physical Education on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Students practiced the flip with a round beanbag and then ran the races with a real pancake, adding the flip at the beginning and end of the race.  They ran a straight line race and then ran one lap around the basketball court.  The weather was a bit frigid to run outside, as they do at the real pancake races.

Our pancake race coincides with the International Pancake Race that is run each year between Olney, England, and Liberal, Kansas, on Shrove Tuesday.  This tradition has been going on for 70 years and this year the race was won by Liberal.  The winner was a cross country coach who had won the race before in 2017.  She beat the Olney, England, winner's time by a little over 7 seconds.

Students had fun running in the pancake race and looked very cute in their scarves and aprons.  Over the years, many of my students have told me that this is one event they always remember.
