Pecan Day - March 25, 2019

In addition to International Waffle Day, today was Pecan Day.  This day is meant to recognize the date in 1775 when Thomas Jefferson gave George Washington a pecan tree sapling to plant on his property at Mount Vernon.  Thomas Jefferson is well known for his home at Monticello and for the beautiful gardens and grounds that surround his home.  Although pecan trees are native to the southern part of the United States, Thomas Jefferson purchased some and planted them on his property further north.

As a warm-up for preschool children today, we did a matching relay where children had to find two paper plates that matched.  Each plate had a picture of a different kind of nut on it like pecans, almonds, coconuts, peanuts, walnuts, pistachios, acorns, and many more.  They had fun with this warm-up.

These two boys go out to the floor to find a match for the coconut tree.

This student shows her successful match.

This student has found the squirrel with the acorn.

 Here is another acorn match.
