Mrs. Zarei's Kindergarten Wins the Roses

Congratulations to Mrs. Zarei's Kindergarten class for choosing Country House as the horse to win the 145th Kentucky Derby last Saturday at Churchill Downs Race Track in Louisville, Kentucky.  I delivered roses to them on Monday morning and each child got to take a rose home.  They were very excited.

It's been interesting this week discussing the results of the Kentucky Derby with my students.  I found a good slow motion video on YouTube that really shows the infraction by the horse, Maximum Security, who was initially declared the winner.  After talking about the safety of the horses and the jockeys, and watching the video, I think children had a better understanding of why the decision was made to disqualify Maximum Security.  Although unfortunate, it is a good lesson for children to learn that, despite all precautions, sometimes things go wrong, rules are accidentally broken, and a decision has to be made that is not favorable to everyone.  Students seemed to understand this better after watching the video.  I was proud of them.
