Returning to Mexico and Spain

We've already had a very busy week since our days off for conferences.  We returned to two countries that we have previously visited, so students are getting better at finding both Mexico and Spain on our class map.  Below are the activities we have done so far this week.

This student finds Mexico on the map.

The Mexican Hat Dance - The skills in this dance were adjusted dependent upon the age of the children.  Students had fun dancing and clapping, and especially loved the big "Ole" at the end.

Three heel changes and two fast claps are a big part of this dance.

The heels and claps are done around the sombrero before circling the hat.

This group circles around the sombrero.

Kindergarten students added a partner component to the dance.

Las Cuatro Esquinas (The 4 Corners) - This game is played in both Mexico and Spain.  It is a running game that involves some speed and strategy.  An equal number of students are placed in 4 corners of the gym (we used hoops).  The remainder of the children are in the center of the square in a different hoop.  When I said "Las Cuatro Esquinas," everyone had to run and change hoops and the children in the middle tried to make it to a corner hoop.  Only a designated number of students could be in each corner hoop so all remaining students had to move to the middle to try again on the next turn.  The idea was to move quickly so you never had to go to the center hoop.

Students leave the center hoop to try and find a corner hoop before they are all filled.

Students make their way to a hoop as fast as they can.
Hopefully, they will get there before it is filled.

These two girls give a thumbs up for making it to a hoop on time.

Gol Portero (Goal Keeper) - This is a game played in Spain but is most likely played in countries all over the world since soccer is such a popular sport.  This game simply places a soccer player one on one against a goalkeeper.  The player tries to score and the goalkeeper attempts to block the shot.  Children take turns so each can have a chance to work on both skills.

A student steps in to the ball for an attempted shot at the goal.

A big kick is taken as the goalkeeper watches the ball
before making her move to prevent the score.

The goalie successfully blocks the shot.

Great save!
