Learning About the "Food Plate" Nutrition Guide
Early childhood students talked about proper nutrition and making good choices about the food they eat. We studied the "Food Plate" nutrition guide and discussed fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. We played games related to food choices and our pre-student teachers from Friends University came to work with the children. One of our goals was to help children differentiate between the various types of food, so we used some food models and had children place them on the correct location for the food plate. For one game, we divided the center circle of the basketball court into sections of a plate and children placed their food choices in the correct location. Many children are still learning the difference between fruits and vegetables, so discussing this with your child at meal time would be very helpful.
