Learning about the Muscles of the Body

Students participate in a fitness circuit
where they perform various
exercises that work on either
strength or flexibility.
In Physical Education, Early Childhood students have been learning about the major muscles of the body. They have studied the trapezius, deltoids, pectorals, biceps, triceps, abdominals, gluteals, hamstrings, quadriceps, and gastrocnemius .  Since these are difficult terms for young children to remember, we often shortened the names to quads, abs, calf, pecs, glutes, etc.  As we played games, we talked about what muscles were being used at that time.  We used polyspots with pictures of the various muscles on them and this helped students to locate and remember the names of the muscles.  I was very pleased with how well the children did during this unit of study.
This student performs a belly push up to help strengthen pecs and triceps.
