Bat Appreciation Day - April 17, 2019

Today was Bat Appreciation Day.  These mammals are often misunderstood, so I decided to show a short video about bats before we played our game of "Bat Tag."  Students enjoyed watching the video and learned quite a bit about bats.  We then played a tag game where one person wore the black cape and chased classmates with a foam frisbee.  If a person was tagged he/she stopped in a "X" position, flapped the arms, and closed the eyes.  A classmate would come and stand in front and say, "Are you a bat?"  The tagged person had to guess who was speaking.  If this was done, the speaking person crawled through the legs of the tagged person and everyone was back in the game.  We turned the lights off in the gym for this game because we had talked about echo location while watching the video.  The children thought this made the game more fun.

Students watch a short video about bats.

This student is the bat who will chase others.

The bat chases her classmates.

A person who is tagged by the bat closes her eyes and flaps her arms.
A classmate will stand in front of her and speak to her.
The tagged person must guess who it is who is talking.

Once a person's name is guessed, that person will crawl through the legs
of the tagged person.  This lets the tagged person back into the game.

Students enjoyed being the bat.
