Visiting Places in Kansas, Sedgwick County, and Wichita

This week in PE we are learning about Kansas, Sedgwick County, and Wichita.  Students are determining whether a site is labeled as a city, county, or state.  This is a difficult concept for young children but they are still having fun doing different activities at various sites.  Students have pretended to fly airplanes at McConnell A.F.B., drive cars at the Kansas Speedway, plant flowers at Botanica, dribble a basketball at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, imitate animals or toss and catch a monkey at the Sedgwick County Zoo, throw stars through a hoop at the Lake Afton Public Observatory, spell out WSU with ropes or people, ride the roller coaster at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, and use the stomp boards and scoops to catch a Wildcat in Manhattan, as well as many more locations.  I placed pictures of each location along 3 areas of the gym labeled state, county, and city. When I called out the name of a site, students had to run and find it and then do the activity associated with that location.  Again, there was much variety but students had a good time.

There are quite a few pictures of our activities below and a link to some more photos at the bottom.

We planted flowers at Wichita's botanical garden, Botanica, during a relay race.

Students practiced galloping in Wichita's Old Cowtown.

Using a hula hoop, students also attempted to lasso a calf or steer at Old Cowtown.

The Kansas prairies have plenty of leaping deer and pronghorn antelope.
Here a student leaps over a series of hurdles.

Our student helper from Friends University leads students through
a roller coaster ride at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Students used a scoop to catch Willie the Wildcat as he
is stomped off a board at KSU in Manhattan, Kansas

It was fun to fly like one of the airplanes at Wichita's McConnell Air Force Base.

These are some ferocious looking gorillas at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Students toss and catch a monkey at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Students sway side to side like the city of Wichita flag.

We pretended to visit the Kansas Speedway located close to Kansas City.
We used hula hoops as our steering wheel and jogged the blue line.

This student is all smiles as he takes the checkered flag at the Kansas Speedway.

Students used ropes to form the letters WSU for Wichita State University.

This class works together to spell out WSU using
their bodies to make the letters.  Well done!

This pre-k student steps in opposition to throw a paper star
through a hoop at the Lake Afton Public Observatory.

Students learned that the Big and Little Arkansas rivers join together
in Sedgwick County.  Here they pretend to row their boat down the river.

This student strikes a pose like the city of Wichita's
Keeper of the Plains statue located downtown on the river.

These students work together to make a free standing teepee
for the Mid America All Indian Center located in Wichita.

We did step aerobics to pretend to climb the steps
of the Kansas capitol building located in Topeka.

Students worked on moving in a hopscotch pattern as they
traveled around the roof of Century II in downtown Wichita.

Students did some free dancing while pretending
to attend a concert at Intrust Bank Arena.
