Happy New Year!

To start the new year off right, students participated in a "Happy New Year" activity.  After watching a short video of the final countdown to 2020 at Times Square in New York, we had our own pretend ball drop.  Everyone donned a party hat, counted down while our ball was dropped, shouted "happy new year," and gave a friend or two a gentle hug.  It was fun.  Afterwards, we did an activity that involved numbers.  Preschool children had to find the specified number out on the gym floor, while kindergarten students did a grouping activity to get in a group with a specific number of people.  We used a song called "Happy New Year."  Students moved in different ways around the gym floor while the music played.  When the number was called out, students either found that number or made a group of people with that number.  Once there, they moved around a cone, shook hands with group members, saluted the new year, and moved on in a new designated manner.  On their last turn everyone met at times square (a cone with a ball on it) and counted down the new year.  They ended with a jump and shout, along with a hug for friends.  It was a nice way to start the 2020 year.

This preschool class watches the ball drop in Times Square.

With their party hats on, this class prepares to have their own ball drop.

Students wait in anticipation for the ball to drop.  They will count down from ten.

Mrs. Ghosh's kindergarten class enjoys their New Year's Eve Times Square Ball Drop.

The ball has dropped and everyone yells "Happy New Year."

Students give each other a gentle hug.

In our movement activity, kindergarten students move in a designated
way until it is time to form a group with a specified number of people.

These boys have made a group of three and are circling their cone.

These boys salute the new year.

Students jump for joy as they shout "Happy New Year."
